COPD Outreach Service

Service Description

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Outreach provides a 'Hospital at Home' (HaH) service for patients who fit the criteria and who present to the Emergency Department with an exacerbation of COPD.  The service was set up under the guidance of Dr. David Curran.  This service is offered to patients who live within a half-hour (30 minutes) drive of Mercy University Hospital.

Up to 4 home visits are performed over a two-week period.

Patients are then discharged back to the care of their General Practitioner (GP).


The team comprises of a Respiratory Nurse Specialist and a Senior Physiotherapist.  The team works in conjunction with a patient's GP, Public Health Nurse (PHN) and respiratory team to offer the care possible.
