OverviewThe Neurology Department in Mercy University Hospital (MUH) is one of two tertiary neurology diagnostic and treatment centres in the Cork region. There are two outpatient clinics per week which service 2,000 patients per year. These patients attend with acute and chronic neurological conditions (for example: migraine, stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, young onset dementia and Parkinsons disease).
In addition, we admit 300 patients per year for evaluation and treatment as emergencies, day cases or as elective admissions for lumbar puncture, electroencephalography (EEG), nerve conduction studies (NCS), electromyography (EMG), computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
TeamThe Neurology team consists of three non-consultant hospital doctors (NCHDs), neurology specialist nurse - Ms. Niamh McCarthy, neurology secretary - Ms. Nuala Coakley and consultant neurologist - Dr. Orna O'Toole.
The neurology team works closely with the physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, social work, dietetics, neurophysiology, radiology, psychiatry and rehabilitation departments to enhance patient care.
Ms. Niamh McCarthy took up the post of specialist nurse in neurology in 2008. She currently counsels and advises patients and families with neurological disorders attending the MUH Neurology Department regarding their diagnoses, treatments and support options. Ms. McCarthy has successfully completed her advanced nurse prescribers course and hopes to establish nurse-led neurology clinics at MUH in the future.
More information on our consultant neurologist, Dr. Orna O'Toole may be found in the Consultant section of this website.
