Role of the Ward Clerk
At MUH a ward clerk is based on each of the wards during 9 am - 5 pm on Monday-Friday. He / she performs an administrative role which involves being the first point of contact on the ward for patients, relatives and visitors.
The ward clerk role is a busy one and was first established at MUH in 1998 with the opening of the new Lee View Block. The purpose of the role involves ensuring the efficient day-to-day administration of the ward or clinical area. Duties involve answering telephone queries, updating the MUH computer system, keeping healthcare records in order, organising and updating all necessary data. The ward clerk ensures that the doctors sign results as they return to the ward and make follow-up appointments / arrangements when patients are being discharged.
The ward clerk is a part of the ward's multi-disciplinary team and requires excellent communication skills, formal secretarial training, as well as an organised and methodical approach to their work. The ward clerk works hand-in-hand with their clinical nurse manager to ensure the smooth running of the ward.
