Overview

Mercy University Hospital (MUH) is a major teaching hospital of University College Cork (UCC) and is an accredited training hospital of the College of Anaesthetists, Ireland.  There are currently eight consultant anaesthetists working at MUH delivering clinical expertise in anaesthesia, critical care and pain medicine.  The size of the department facilitates an individualised approach to the unique requirements of every trainee.

MUH is a tertiary referral hospital for hepato-biliary, upper gastrointestinal, urological and vascular surgery.  It also has considerable volumes of specialist vascular surgery and lower gastrointestinal surgery.  The specialised nature of our services afford anaesthesia trainees the opportunity to gain experience in managing the challenges of this distinctive clinical environment.  MUH has an emergency department which is open 24/7 all year-round generating an acute medical, paediatric and surgical workload requiring varied anaesthesia and critical care input.

Procedural anaesthesia services are provided in four main theatres and interventional radiology rooms.  Our purpose-designed pre-operative assessment unit evaluates and prepares over 2,000 patients for surgery every year.  Critical care services are primarily delivered in a five-bed, level-three intensive care unit.  Daily rounds by the acute pain team aim to help achieve an optimal standard of post-operative care.
