Dr Johnny O’Mahony graduated with honours from Trinity College Dublin (TCD), Ireland in 2010 (MB BCh BAO). He completed his internship at St James’s Hospital, followed by Basic Surgical (2012-2014) and Basic Specialist Training Schemes (Plastic Surgery, 2014-2015) through the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). During this time he was awarded Membership of Royal College of Surgeons, and completed a Higher Diploma in Human Factors and Patient Safety (RCSI). He also began a Masters of Surgery (RCSI), which he completed following a year as a Registrar in Plastic Surgery.
 
He has a strong academic focus, undertaking a year as a Senior Medical Demonstrator (Anatomy) at University College Cork (UCC), and a year as an Associate Professor in Radiology/Research Registrar at the Centre for Advanced Medical Imaging at St James’s Hospital, Dublin (affiliated with TCD). He completed the Radiology Specialist Training Programme in 2023 and undertook fellowships in Interventional Radiology and Musculoskeletal Radiology at Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Trust from 2023 – 2025. He works as a consultant diagnostic and interventional radiologist at Mercy University Hospital in Cork, Ireland, and is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Radiology at UCC.
 
In addition to his clinical practice, he has a strong interest in education and training, having designed, facilitated and delivered post graduate training courses in surgery and radiology. He is also involved in developing the practice of radiology, most recently contributing to the updated current RCR guidelines on sedation and analgesia in Radiology. He is also a member of the CIRSE working group on low flow vascular malformations, and a council member of the Society for Anaesthesia in Radiology.
